Caroline's Birth Story

These past three weeks have been nothing short of amazing, incredible and quite humbling. It is so incredibly hard to believe that just three weeks ago I was saying a short prayer for baby girl still growing in my belly. Now I pray over her while she is resting in my arms rocking her to sleep.

Caroline’s early arrival came as quite a shock to me as I was sure she was going to wait until after her due date to be born. Looking back, there were a few signs of an early delivery. I had been quite exhausted since the beginning of February. My workouts had gotten extremely uncomfortable that week and the breaks I needed to take had increased exponentially during class. I had also lost my mucus plug Tuesday of that week.

I wanted to share her labor and delivery story this for myself as well as you the readers.  There is nothing to truly prepare you for labor or the joy of becoming a parent. Please don't let my story scare you, it was worth every second. Thursday night I came home from work pure exhausted. I had gotten up early to go to the gym, then had to do an observation at local pre-school and finish up some reports. It was a great day at work which was topped off by a beautiful baby shower hosted by my co-workers. Once I got home around 6, I had an early dinner and decided to head to bed early.

I woke up Friday morning around 4am. It was typical for me to wake up 3-4 times a night to go to the restroom. When I sat up to go to the bathroom, I felt a gush of fluid. It was quite a shock. I knew immediately that my water had broke. There was no mistaking the difference between that and going to the restroom. I quickly pulled the sheets off my side of the bed and went to change clothes. I started to notice some contractions but could not distinguish a pattern. I groggily called the nurse hotline to see what to do next. The doctor on call recommended that I monitor my contractions and hang out at the house for a few hours before coming into the hospital. By that time it was 4:45, I finished up some work and sent a few emails to cover meetings for the day. Then I hopped in the shower and decided to get ready. I finally woke up Joe around 5:30 and told him everything that had happened. I could tell immediately that he was quite shocked and very nervous. We did not have any hospital bags packed yet. We managed to grab the essentials and thankfully live close to the hospital. By the time we packed everything up, my contractions started getting uncomfortable and I could not stand still for long. I was timing them on my phone but still could not distinguish a pattern. We got everything ready and headed to the hospital around 6:30. I was still feeling okay when we got to the hospital. My contractions were uncomfortable but not unbearable. We were admitted quickly and taken to a delivery room. It all still felt quite surreal. The nurse had me sit in the bed to get checked and put on the monitors for Caroline’s heart rate. My contractions sitting in the bed were 100% worse than standing. When the nurse checked around 7:30, I was already 5 cm dilated. I immediately requested an epidural. I knew we had to wait for fluids and blood work to be completed before it was administered. This is where things got tough. The nurses had difficulty getting blood which is typical for me. The first test vial did not get enough blood to measure my platelets so they had to run lab work twice. While I waited, my contractions became increasingly uncomfortable. The pain took my breath away with each contraction. They were still intermittent but had drastically increased in pain. The best relief I felt was sitting on the medicine ball and having Joe press on my lower back/ hips during contractions. While I waited for the epidural, the nurse offered Demerol to help take the edge off which I happily accepted. The effects were immediate and I felt immediately drowsy and nauseous. I could still feel contractions but they were much more tolerable. The relief lasted about 30 minutes before my contractions were back in full force. Thankfully, we finally got enough blood drawn and anesthesiologist administered the epidural shortly afterwards around 10:30. I thought that I would be scared or worried during the epidural process but the pain was so overwhelming that I never gave it a second thought. The worse part was sitting still for so long while they prepped and administered the epidural. The doctor immediately administered a bolus of pain meds and after 2-3 minutes I felt relief. After the epidural, the nurse checked my cervix and I was dilated 10 centimeters! I was in so much pain for a reason! The doctor let baby progress down on her own for about 30 minutes. I began pushing around 11 and Caroline was born at 12pm. That hour of pushing of the most pain I ever experienced. I never received the epidural medications so delivery was far more painful than the contractions. I remember feeling what I can only describe as a combination of frantic and overwhelmed. I am thankful for the nurses, doctor and Joe who helped calm me down and refocus for those final few pushes.

It was all worth it hearing Caroline’s first cry. They immediately placed her on my chest and Joe was able to cut the cord. The first hour was absolutely perfect. Little girl rested on my chest while her dad sat beside us talking to her.
Caroline’s labor and delivery was not like anything I ever expected. The next five days were quite a rollercoaster as well. We ended up staying almost a week due to her losing a significant amount of weight and elevated bilirubin levels. The end result made it all worth it. Becoming a mother has filled me with such joy and love for this baby girl. I can’t imagine life or our family any other way.

Simple & Sweet Nursery

The nursery is finished. The diapers are purchased. All the clothes are washed. The only thing that is left is for this babe to make her grande debut. When dreaming of baby girl's nursery I knew I wanted to keep things simple and girly. I went with a theme of light pink with pops of grey and gold.

This little corner is my favorite place in the house. I love to sit and rock and dream of how much our lives will be changing in just a few weeks.  Her name is a combination of grandmothers names. The monogram over her crib is a sweet reminder of the significance of her name.

Other favorite room details include the handmade garland I purchased off of Etsy. It makes the room feel a little more whimsical. I also love the print in the corner which is a striking resemblance to our pup Charlie. The bookcase was one my father made for my bedroom with a fresh coat of paint. The doll on the lowest shelf was mine as a child. All of the photos and accessories came from Hobby Lobby.

Some features that are missing in these photos is that the attached bathroom has a built in vanity area which we are using as a changing table. The nursery also has quite a large walk in closet which is used for storing toys.

Pregnancy | Week 37

Baby girl is officially full term! No signs of her making an appearance anytime soon. I am convinced that I will carry her to 40 weeks and then some.

Size of Baby: Baby is still around 19 inches long and weighs about 6 lbs. She is now the size of a honeydew.

Weight Gain:  Up 29 pounds. Hoping that my diminishing stomach size and lack of appetite will help my weight gain starts to slow down these last few weeks.

Maternity Clothes: I am starting to wonder how I will ever go back to normal pants. Full panel pregnancy pants are a dream!

Nursery: Everything is finished and ready for baby girl's arrival!

Movement: Yes and it is starting to hurt. Baby girl is running out of room and she is making it known. She is still pretty high up and rests right below my ribcage for most of the day. This makes bending over or picking things up off the floor quite nauseating.

Symptoms: I am feeling overall uncomfortable these past few weeks. I noticed it start around week 34 and has gradually gotten worse. Lower back pain is a new symptom this week. Honestly, I have loved pregnancy up until this point. I am beyond thankful for a pregnancy that has overall been pretty painless and symptom free.

Sleep: Waking up on my back by the end of the night very frequently. I try my best to stay on my left side and keep multiple pillows plus my pregnancy pillow wedged around me.

Cravings: I enjoyed my first hamburger in years today. Man, it was delicious! I am loving french fries right now as well.

What I Miss: Sleeping on my stomach and having my old body back. I truly can't wait until I can lay on my stomach and stretch in cobra pose.

Exercise: 5 PB classes this week. Seeing if I can make 19 classes in February which is a challenge my studio is doing!

Best Moments: Washing the last of the baby clothes and finalizing the organization of baby's nursery. I can not believe that she could be here at any time!

Pregnancy | Week 36

Guess who accidentally made a cameo in this week's photo! That little ball of fluff is not leaving my side these days. So, another week down equals a week closer to meeting sweet baby girl. The anticipation and unknown of her arrival is killing me. My planning personality hates the unknown timeline of delivery. Part of me wishes that labor and delivery was just like another routine doctor appointment. You plan for it show up and then come home with a baby. Unfortunately that is not how labor works. I am praying for patience and peace to get me through these next few weeks of uncertainty.

Size of Baby: Baby is still around 19 inches long and weighs about 6 lbs. She is the size of a papaya.

Gender: Sweet, sweet baby girl.

Weight Gain:  Up 27 pounds. Feeling quite large these days.

Maternity Clothes: All day, every day.

Nursery: Everything is finished and ready for baby's arrival! I have one last load of laundry to complete this weekend and then need to figure out the best way to organize her clothes. We also have the stroller assembled and car seat installed. Going to get it inspected Friday after work.

Movement: Feeling her roll around a lot more. She will stick her butt out of my side trying to stretch out. Sitting on the couch at night is very uncomfortable as she will happily lodge herself up into my ribcage after dinner.

Symptoms: Pregnancy swelling is no joke. At the end of the day, my shoes are becoming quite uncomfortable. I have given up trying to wear my wedding rings since my fingers swell so much by the end of the day. Exhaustion and tiredness set in each day when I get home from work. I also have a pretty patch of varicose veins on my right leg. I am 99% sure that I have a few stretch marks as well but just can't see them. I knew they were inevitable as I am prone to stretch marks and had quite a few already.

Sleep: Sleep really depends on the night. I am getting up to use the restroom more times than I care to acknowledge. Then finding a good position once I crawl back into bed is very difficult. I have ended up on my back with my feet propped up on pillows frequently.

Cravings: Still loving carbs and sweets. I don't think that will be changing anytime soon.

What I Miss: Oh how I miss moving at a normal speed. Sleeping on my stomach is a close second!

Exercise: 4 PB classes this week and some long walks in beautiful weather once the snow cleared. The studio is having a challenge of completing 19 classes in February which I am itching to give a try!

Best Moments: This weekend was filled with a perfect mix of time with just me and Joe and celebrating baby. Joe and I enjoyed a lazy Saturday paired with a fun date night enjoying fondue. Then Sunday I enjoyed lunch with with friends celebrating baby girl. We also received a ton of adorable outfits from Joe's family this weekend.

Pregnancy | Week 35

I honestly can't believe that little one will be here in (give or take) 5 weeks. The first two trimesters drug by so slowly. However, this third has flown by! I am thankful because I have been quite uncomfortable since the start of the third trimester and I am more than ready to meet baby girl.

Size of Baby: Baby is almost 19 inches long and the size of a coconut. She weighs around 5-6 lbs.

Gender: Sweet, sweet baby girl.

Weight Gain:  Haven't stepped on the scale this week. It's really avoidance at all the sweets and junk food I consumed wile being snowed in. Not feeling too much bigger but will check when I go back to the doctor next week.

Maternity Clothes: Surprise, that top above is not maternity! I have been wearing some of my "loose" blouses from my wardrobe to help stretch my outfits these last few weeks.

Nursery: We tried to hang some pictures this weekend only to realize that we did not have the right hooks. Hoping to finish everything this week.

Movement: Her kicks and jabs are getting quite uncomfortable. The strangest feeling is when she stretches and I can feel jabs on both sides of my stomach at the same time She is still very high and often presses up into my rib cage which has made me quite miserable.

Symptoms: Still battling swelling and sinus congestion. My heartburn, indigestion and stomach problems have come back  with a vengeance. Woof.

Sleep: I am still sleeping pretty well. I wake up 3-4 times during the night to use the restroom.

Cravings: Still loving carbs and sweets. I don't think that will be changing anytime soon.

What I Miss: Feeling like myself and moving at a normal speed. I laugh at myself all the time because it takes me twice as long to get up from the sofa, change positions in Pure Barre or walk anywhere.

Exercise: The snow put a dent in my workouts as I played it safe and did not leave the house for 3 days! I made it to 2 Pure Barre classes this week. I am having to modify the moves more and more each week.

Best Moments: Not a best moment, but I was really looking forward to a baby shower on Sunday. Unfortunately we had to cancel because the restaurant was closed. On the bright side, we decided to re-schedule for when baby gets here so all my friends are able to meet little one.

Pregnancy | Week 34

While I was writing this I realized how much my definition of normal or typical has changed. My typical day has changed tremendously from a year ago. I am sure it will start to change even more once little one is here. What I am finding with pregnancy is that slowly you become immune to certain things and over time you get used to a new state of normal. I am thankful to have this little space to document all these changes.

Size of Baby: Baby is 18 inches long and the size of a savoy cabbage or a basketball hoop. We will go with the basketball  hoop. Little one is sure growing! She weighs around 5 lbs.

Gender: Adorable baby girl.

Weight Gain:  Holding this week at 25 pounds.

Maternity Clothes: I have expanded my maternity wardrobe to include Joe's fleece as it is the only think that ribs around my growing belly. My maternity clothes are still fitting me well. I am just getting tired of the same 5-6 sweaters and pants. Trying to hold strong and not buy any more clothes until after baby is here.

Nursery: We finished the bookcase and now need to hang everything on the wall. Hoping to share the finished product next week!

Movement: Little one still hangs out on my left side most days. She moves and kicks all the time. I have figured how to "nudge" her back when she starts hanging out a little too far into my ribs.

Symptoms: Swelling has started to become a bigger issue. Thankfully, after I rest for an hour or two it usually goes away. Exhaustion sets in a lot quicker and I am quickly out of breath after simple activities like climbing the stairs.  I am still battling sinus congestion which my doctor said just may linger until baby comes. Oh joy. I have really felt good up until this past week and I am so thankful for that!

Sleep: I still have some off nights but sleep pretty good overall. I wake up 3-4 times during the night to use the restroom.

Cravings: Oh man, I have failed to mention my growing love of Butterfingers these past few weeks. I am loving all form of desserts with Butterfingers mixed in weather it is ice cream or just a fun size bar.

What I Miss: Feeling like myself. I have some days or even moments that are better than others in which I have more energy and pep. However, overall I feel like I am dragging through out the day.

Exercise: Made it to 3 Pure Barre classes this week and enjoyed one last warmer walk with Charlie.

Best Moments: We toured our hospital this weekend. My physician practice is located on the same campus as the hospital which is a dedicated women and family center. That means one of my physicians is always available. I felt very at ease after the tour as the facilities at the hospital resemble a nice hotel more than a medical setting.

Pregnancy | Weeks 30- 33

2016 is going to be the year of the baby. At this point I am embracing the fact that our lives are now consumed with parent classes, baby showers and adorable baby clothes. I am so excited that our family is expanding. Many days I have to pinch myself as I still can't believe that there is an little girl growing inside me. Well, until she gives me a gentle jab in the ribs which quickly reminds me! These past three weeks have been quite a blur due to holiday celebrations and getting back into the swing of things at work. I hope now that things have calmed down I can get back to regular posting.

Here are the amazing highlights of everything that has been going on with pregnancy for the last three weeks.

Size of Baby: At 33 weeks, baby girl is the size of a cauliflower or the length of a kid's tennis racket . She weighs around 3 pounds.

Gender: Adorable baby girl.

Weight Gain:  A total 25 pounds. Honestly, I have been enjoying treats guilt free this entire pregnancy.  I enjoy dessert with dinner almost daily. So I know exactly where the pounds have come from. Pregnancy has really let me relax my diet a bit more and enjoy things I would have never eaten before. I still enjoy a salad almost daily for lunch and keep breakfast pretty clean as well. Just adding in a few treats here and there. :)

Maternity Clothes: My only non-maternity clothes are my workout clothes. Even those are getting a bit snug, especially the tanks which are getting shorter and shorter. I am hoping to rotate through my five favorite tanks that still fit up until she is due.

Nursery: We have made huge progress on the nursery. The curtains are hung, glider assembled and rug purchased. The last step is to hang everything on the walls and finish the bookcase.

Movement: All the time. She currently loves to hang out on my right side most of the day. It is so amazing to feel her move around but quite uncomfortable at the same time. I also have been experiencing braxton hicks contractions more frequently especially at night.

Symptoms: Still battle days where I have severe stomach aches. This was especially bad over the holidays. I have also noticed my range of motion when bending over has decreased drastically. My fingers and feet have started to swell. My fingers swell pretty easy from working out or in the heat. So I am surprised that they took this long to react. I can still wear my wedding band comfortably but that is it. The most surprising symptom this trimester has been getting carsick on my drive to work each morning. Not fun. I am also battling sinus congestion for several months. I finally broke down and got some antibiotics from the doctor which fingers crossed will help.

Sleep: I cycle through a few days of really good sleep followed by a night or two of insomnia. I am trying to get more walking and exercise in to decrease my restlessness at night.

Cravings: Sweets and Carbs are still staples in my diet these days. I am also enjoying making punch at home by mixing pineapple juice, grape juice and ginger ale. Yum!

What I Miss: Normal clothes. I miss being able to wear tunics and also the ability to pick the correct size off the rack at the store. I have bought a few tops that looked huge to me on the hanger only to get home and realize they are way too snug!

Exercise: I am consistently making it to 3-4 pure barre classes a week. The ab work is becoming more and more challenging each day. However, the rest of the class still feels great!

Best Moments: Baby M had her first baby shower this weekend! It was so great celebrate this little bundle of joy with my family.
